Guntings String Guide is an independent, educational library about string instruments. We build in-depth profiles of instruments from guitar and violin families to traditions from around the world, and we pair that library with a comparator so a curious reader can set two or more instruments side by side and see how they actually differ.

We write for people at the very beginning of their curiosity: a student wondering what to pick up next, a parent trying to help a child choose a first instrument, a teacher looking for a clear explanation to share with a class, or simply a listener who wants to understand what they are hearing. Nothing here assumes prior musical training, and we try to define terms the first time they appear rather than assuming familiarity.

Our editorial approach has a few consistent principles. We describe differences between instruments in relative, hedged terms rather than declaring one objectively "better" or "easier," because what suits one learner may not suit another. We treat instruments from non-Western traditions on their own cultural terms rather than as curiosities defined by contrast with more familiar instruments. And where facts are genuinely contested, variable by region, or simply not settled in the historical record, we say so directly instead of presenting a single tidy version as certain.

Guntings String Guide is not affiliated with any instrument manufacturer, retailer, teaching service, or streaming platform, and we do not sell or review specific products. Our content is researched using recognized academic and institutional references, which are listed at the end of every article and instrument profile, and further explained on our Sources and Methodology page.
